| The John Wheatley Golf
Classic is an event in John’s memory to raise money and support
charitable youth programs that have a positive impact on today’s
society. In 1998 John became a member of the Concerned Businessman
Association and worked with the Hartford Police Athletic League
(PAL) to create a golf tournament to raise money for inner city
youth programs.
The Tournament
The golf tournament was such a success that it continued and
expanded to include other organizations in the local community. When
John joined the Sequin Level Lodge and became a Shriner, he
continued the golf tournament along with the help of his fellow
brothers. The tournament has supported the following organizations
over the years:
- The House of Bread
- Special Olympics
- The Doc Hurley Scholarship Fund
- The Governor’s Partnership on Prevention
- CT Chip (Connecticut Child Identification Program)
- The Shriners Burn Unit
- The Jimmy Fund\Danna Faber
In November 2002 John lost his life to leukemia. This disease
quickly and unexpectedly robbed John of his life. His fellow bothers
were determined to keep this event going and renamed the tournament
the John Wheatley Golf Classic in his memory.
